2018 NASPA Annual Conference

Spoken Word Poetry and the Black College Experience

Spoken word poetry has a strong tie to the African oral tradition and tells a story through poetic devices and performance. "this", an original spoken word poem, shares the exhaustive story of Black college students and calls out false narratives of meritocracy. The presenter of this session will maximize the strengths of the population to highlight their experiences and discuss the possibility of spoken word poetry as a tool for development in student affairs, as a means for expression and empowerment. Come and learn how other programs and you can incorporate spoken word poetry into student affairs.
