2018 NASPA Annual Conference

Community Service

Give Back to Philadelphia!

As part of your NASPA Annual Conference experience, plan ahead to give back to the local community. This year, in lieu of an on-site service project we will be collecting donations for a few of our institution's community partners.

One project includes contributing 100 backpacks with school supplies for the Paul L. Dunbar School in Philadelphia, PA. This is one way in which we will be honoring NASPA's 100th anniversary by setting a goal to collect 100 backpacks filled with school supplies from 100 individuals and institutions. Consider working with colleagues at your institution to provide a backpack filled with school supplies for any age ranging from PK-8.  "This year," the principal at the Paul L. Dunbar School, Dawn Moore, stated, "will bring promise and academic fulfillment to our students, family and community. Destination Excellence will be fueled by our love for children, collaborative efforts, and determination. All students will achieve at high levels with all of our adults contributing tirelessly."

Supplies to include in the backpack could include pencils, pens, rulers, glue, crayons and so forth. To indicate your interest in donation a backpack, fill out the volunteer form here

We will also be collecting toiletries for the organization Youth Services Inc. (YSI). For over 65 years, Youth Services Inc. has upheld a tradition of excellence, dedicated to meeting the changing needs of children and families in Philadelphia. Their mission is to offer accessible, quality services to at-risk children and families. They are dedicated to strengthening the family unit, helping at-risk teens and promoting child safety. They have five programs and serve close to 7,000 children and families annually.

As a non-profit, YSI relies on donations of all sorts. We encourage you to participate in our toiletries' drive by packing extra toiletries or donating shampoo, soap, or lotion from your hotel. YSI can also use baby wash, wipes, and lotion for babies or soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and toothbrushes for the homeless teens.

All donations can be dropped off in the registration area at this year's Annual Conference.

We know that by working with colleagues we can showcase our own mission as educators to help shape the future and give back to our host city!
