As part of your NASPA Annual Conference experience, sign-up to give back to our host city when you register online for the conference. The local arrangements team is excited to announce that we are working with the Youth Emergency Service for our Community Service project this year.
Youth Emergency Service is looking forward to providing volunteer and service opportunities for the NASPA 2018 Conference in Philadelphia. For over 65 years, Youth Services Inc. has upheld a tradition of excellence, dedicated to meeting the changing needs of children and families in Philadelphia. Their mission is to offer accessible, quality services to at-risk children and families. They are dedicated to strengthening the family unit, helping at-risk teens and promoting child safety. They have five programs and serve close to 7,000 children and families annually.
For the purpose of the conference, we will accept 50 volunteers will be split into two groups. One group of 25 volunteers will assist at the teen shelter knows as YES. YES - Youth Emergency Service is the oldest and largest in the Philadelphia area providing emergency housing and resources for homeless and runaway teens ages 12- 17.
The second group of 25 volunteers will assist with the Baring House crisis nursery provides emergency day care services for children newborn to age 5.
Exact volunteer opportunities are still being solidified, but one possibility will be breakfast and conversations with the youth at the teen shelter. This will allow volunteers the opportunity to prepare a meal and serve the youth. It will be a great opportunity to teach the teens a recipe, enjoy breakfast and good conversation, and perhaps even work through organizing donations.
At the nursery, assistance will be needed in spending time with the children but also helping with administrative and marketing support as this is where the main office for YSI is located.
Registration for this event is $20. The $20 will be donated to the host of the community service project after the conference. If you do not appear to the day of service, the $20 will go to NASPA as an administrative fee. Registration also includes a custom t-shirt and a boxed lunch.
Along with an actual day of service, the local arrangements team is arranging onsite donation drives so that all conference participants can join in on the effort. More information on how you can participate will be announced. Check back for updates!
