Engaging in Appropriate Conduct at NASPA Events
NASPA is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment and strives to address the interests of its members and the student affairs profession on issues related to social justice, equity, and inclusion. We seek to foster a positive environment built upon a foundation of trust, respect, open communications, and ethical behavior.
To provide all participants – members and other attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff and volunteers – the opportunity to benefit from the event, NASPA is committed to providing a harassment-free environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, religion or other group identity. As an Association, NASPA is strongly committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and the free expression of ideas.
NASPA seeks to provide a conference environment in which diverse participants may learn, network and enjoy the company of colleagues in an environment of mutual respect. It is a shared responsibility to create and hold that environment for the benefit of all. NASPA prohibits discrimination and harassment at any time, including during its events or within publications and online learning communities.
NASPA participants are expected to conduct themselves in all NASPA capacities, events, and settings with:
- Consideration and respect in their speech and actions and in their personal, professional and business conduct;
- Honesty in their professional relationships and refrain from taking credit for the work of others without specific acknowledgement and authorization;
- Respect for individuals’ personal boundaries and conduct;
- Behavior that is free from:
- Demeaning, discriminatory, insulting, or harassing language or actions, in person or online;
- Harassment of any kind, including but not limited to unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment.
Speakers are asked to frame discussions as openly and inclusively as possible and to be aware of how language or images may be perceived by others. Participants may – and do – exercise their option to leave a session or a conversation. Exhibitors must also follow all NASPA policies and regulations.
All participants are expected to observe these rules and behaviors in all conference venues, including online venues, and conference social events. Participants asked to stop a hostile or harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
Communicating and Reporting Violations of Conduct Policies
Please contact conference staff in the NASPA Office at conference if you believe you have been harassed or that a harassment problem exists. All such reports will be directed immediately to the NASPA Executive Team who will determine and carry out the appropriate course of action, and who may consult with and engage other NASPA staff, leaders and legal counsel according to the policies approved by the Board. Event security and/or local law enforcement may be involved, as appropriate based on the specific circumstances.
